Today we will be dealing with 10 Bible verse for mercy and forgiveness. The scripture says in Romans 9:15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. This reveals that not everyone will be a partaker of God’s mercy. God will only have mercy on whom He will have mercy and compassion on those He will have it on.

However, we as believers stand a greater chance of enjoying the mercy of God Almighty. This is because we have been redeemed by the precious blood of Christ Jesus. Forgiveness is the act of pardoning one for an offence that warranty a degree of punishment. Forgiveness is of God. Christ taught us to always forgive one another as our father in heaven has Forgiven us all our sin. Mercy precede forgiveness. When mercy is present, forgiveness won’t be hard to do. Little wonder the scripture says in Proverbs 28:13 He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy. Mercy sometimes means forgiveness.

When God have mercy on an individual or nation, He pardon their shortcomings. Similarly in our lives, when we find mercy in the sight of people we have wronged, they will forgive us. When you pray for mercy and forgiveness, it is important to use the scripture as a point of reference to your prayer. There are several instances in the scripture where promised that he will have mercy and show compassion towards us. Christ in most of his miraculous deeds was moved with compassion. We have highlighted ten Bible verses for mercy and forgiveness.

Bible Verses For Mercy

  • Micah 7:18-19 Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in mercy. He will again have compassion on us, and will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.
  • Ephesians 2:4-5 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)
  • Hebrews 2:17-18 Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.
  • Hebrews 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
  • 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
  • Deuteronomy 7:9 Therefore know that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments.
  • Proverbs 3:3-4 Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man.
  • Matthew 25:35-40,45 For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’ Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me. … Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.
  • Psalm 25:10 All the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth, to such as keep His covenant and His testimonies.”
  • Psalm 86:15 But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth.

Bible Verses For Forgiveness

  • Psalm 51:1–2 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin
  • Numbers 14:18 The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation
  • Psalm 103:10–12 He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
  • Isaiah 1:18 Come now, let us settle the matter,’ says the Lord. ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.
  • Ephesians 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.
  • Matthew 26:28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
  • Numbers 15:28 And the priest shall make atonement before the LORD for the person who makes a mistake, when he sins unintentionally, to make atonement for him, and he shall be forgiven.
  • 1 John 1:9 If he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘repent,’ you must forgive him.”
  • Luke 17:4 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
  • 2 Corinthians 2:5-8, 10 Now if anyone has caused pain, he has caused it not to me, but in some measure — not to put it too severely — to all of you. For such a one, this punishment by the majority is enough, so you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him. Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive.
