Today we shall be studying Psalm 19 Meaning Verse By Verse. Psalm 19 is the 19th psalm in the Book of Psalms, known by its first verse, in the King James Version, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showing his handiwork psalm considers the glory of God in creation, and moves to reflect on the character and use of “the law of the LORD.

Psalm 19 naturally falls into three parts: God’s revelation in creation (verses 1-6), God’s revelation in the law (verses 7-11), and the response of the man of faith (verses 12-14). The point of the first six verses is that the heavenly bodies are objective proof that a powerful, creative God exists.

PSALM 19 Meaning Verse by Verse

Psalm 19:1 “THE HEAVENS DECLARE THE GLORY OF GOD, AND THE FIRMAMENT PROCLAIMS HIS HANDIWORK.

This psalm is the first verse and it points out the two areas where God has chosen to reveal Himself: “the heavens” refer to what appears in the sky about; “the firmament” means the expanse of God’s creation. The entire universe testifies of the Creator and brilliantly displays “the glory of God”. The idea is that God had made those heavens by his own hands, and that the firmament, thus adorned with sun, and moon, and stars, showed the wisdom and skill with which it was done..

Psalm 19:2 “DAY UNTO DAY UTTERETH SPEECH, AND NIGHT UNTO NIGHT DECLARES KNOWLEDGE”

This verse is gives us the understanding of the constant and continued succession of day and night. Which declares the glory of God, and shows him to be possessed of infinite knowledge and wisdom. And which brings a new accession of knowledge to men, the sun for a light by day, and the moon and stars for a light by night which constantly and successively proclaim the glory and wisdom of God. One of the greatest things God did for mankind was to establish an evening and a morning making a day. The evening was made for rest and the morning to work. The verse is speaking of one day and night sliding over into another.

Psalm 19:3 “ THERE IS NO SPEECH NOR LANGUAGE, WHERE  THERE VOICE IS NOT HEARD

There are different nations in the world which have different languages, so that one nation cannot discourse with or be understood by another. But the heavens speak in a language which is universal and intelligible to them all.

Psalm 19:4 “THEIR LINE IS GONE OUT THROUGH ALL THE EARTH, AMID THEIR WORDS TO THE END OF THE WORLD. IN THEM HE HATH SET A TABERNACLE FOR THE SUN.”

The heavens and the sky carry their message about God’s glory throughout the earth. The apostle Paul quoted this statement in Romans 10:18. By doing so he noted that the message about God delivered by nature preceded the message of the gospel, and made the Gentiles and Jews inexcusable.

Psalm 19:5WHICH IS AS A BRIDEGROOM COMING OUT OF HIS CHAMBER AND REJOICETH AS A STRONG MAN TO RUN A RACE.”

The word “And rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race”: In which he shows his readiness, velocity, and strength. And this denotes the swiftness of the sun in running its course, and its indefatigableness in its constant motion. Though it has been employed therein for so many thousands of years, yet every morning rises with the same cheerfulness, pursues its course, and is never weary. All which may points to us that we must be swift to run to and fro, and ask for the strength to fulfil the course. In which Christ, the Son of righteousness, is held forth in so glorious a manner.

Psalm 19:6 “HIS GOING FORTH IS FROM THE END OF THE HEAVEN, AND HIS CIRCUIT UNTO THE END OF IT, AND THERE IS NOTHING HID FROM THE HEAT THEREOF”

This verse explains the sun;  From the east where it rises to the west, where it sets. Which shone out in a very illustrious manner, and Christ became, what the sun is to the earth, the light of the world. And there is nothing hid from the heat thereof, though things may hide from the light of it, yet not from its heat. The sun that shines on the earth, shines on every inch of it at some time or the other.

Psalm 19:7 “THE LAW OF THE LORD IS PERFECT , CONVERTING THE SOUL, THE TESTIMONY OF THE LORD IS SURE MAKING WISE THE SIMPLE”

The Law of the Lord is perfect. Whatsoever proceeds from God is perfect in its kind. His law especially, the rule of life to his people. The law itself is holy and it helps in Converting the soul, restoring the soul,  Like food to the hungry, Like comfort to the sorrowful and afflicted.

The testimony of the Lord is a witness between God and man and  will not mislead or deceive any man that trusts to it, and follows it, but will bring him to happiness. The law converts the soul, because by studying the law, we all know that we are guilty of sin and deserve to die. We must repent of our sin and cry out for a Savior. We would not realize we needed a Savior, if we were not made aware that we are sinners.

Psalm 19:8 “THE STATUSES OF THE LORD ARE RIGHT, REJOICING THE HEARTS, THE COMMANDMENTS OF THE LORD IS PURE, ENLIGHTENING THE EYES”

The word here rendered statutes properly means mandates, rules given to anyone to guide him, It refers to the laws of God considered as appointed, or as the result of divine authority. promises of mercy.

The commandment of the Lord Is pure and is without the least mixture of error. It “Is pure”: Without the least mixture of error. It enlightening the mind, with a complete manifestation of God’s will and man’s duty.

Psalm 19:9 “THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS CLEAN, ENDURING FOR EVER, THE JUDGEMENT OF THE LORD ARE TRUE AND RIGHTEOUS ALTOGETHER”

The word of God is intended, which teaches men to fear the Lord. It gives a full account of the worship of God, It instructs in the matter and manner of worship with reverence and godly fear than the Gospel does. And this is clean and the doctrines of it direct to the blood of Christ. Which cleanses from all sin, and to the righteousness of Christ,

The judgments of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether”: “the judgments of the Lord” are the same with “the word of God”, and these seem to design that part of the word, which contains rules of God’s judging and governing his people. Or the laws, orders, and ordinances of Christ in his house, which his people should observe, and yield a cheerful obedience to.

Psalm 19:10 “MORE TO BE DESIRED ARE THEY THAN GOLD, YEA, THAN MUCH FINE GOLD SWEETER ALSO THAN HONEY AND THE HONEYCOMB

The greatest wealth this world has ever known is not silver and gold, but life everlasting in Christ Jesus. Knowledge of God and His Word brings great wealth. The sweetest statement any Christian can ever hope to hear is, (well done thy good and faithful servant), when we stand before the righteous Judge (Jesus), on judgement day.

Psalm 19:11MOREOVER BY THEM IS THY SERVANT WARNED, AND IN KEEPING OF THEM THERE IS GREAT REWARD.”

All through the Bible we find that keeping God’s law brings great rewards, or blessings when they are duly observed. There is another side to this however. We are warned over and over, that not to keep God’s laws brings a curse from God.

Psalm 19:12WHO CAN DISCERN HIS ERRORS? CLEANSE THOU ME FROM HIDDEN FAULTS.”

In this verse the word “Cleanse thou me” means we can be cleaned both by justification, or the pardon of my sins, through the blood of thy Son, which is in due time to be shed for me . And by sanctification through thy Holy Spirit, working in accordance with thy word. To the further renovation of my heart and life.

Psalm 19:13KEEP BACK THY  SERVANT ALSO FROM PRESUMPTUOUS SINS, LET THEM NOT HAVE DOMINION OVER ME! THEN I SHALL BE BLAMELESS, AND INNOCENT OF GREAT TRANSGRESSION.”

In verse above we can observe that itis speaking of those who are followers of the Lord. In fact, they have made Jesus their Lord, as well as Savior. Presumptuous in this particular Scripture, means proud or arrogant. Pride comes before a fall. I have noticed that some of us Christians who have walked with the Lord for a long period of time and have been operating in the gifts of the Spirit have a tendency to feel above the new Christian. We must be very careful with this attitude. It certainly is pride and arrogance, and God will not allow this.

Psalm 19:14LET THE WORDS OF MY MOUTH, AND THE MEDITATION OF MY HEART, BE ACCEPTABLE IN THY SIGHT, O LORD, MY STRENGTH AND MY REDEEMER.

This is the last verse we can see that the prayer speaks for itself, as the prayer of a truly righteous man. One might almost call that man a perfect man whose whole life was lived in perfect accord with it.

It talks about the words that we speak which must be in harmony with our thought and the voluntary meditation of our hearts to form an image accepted by God.
