Whatever thing that contends with God in the life of a Christian is a sin. Social media is the new religion that everyone practice including Christians. Not to say that the use of social media is bad, however, when it becomes an addiction then you sure need help. Social media is everywhere, there is always an update every second, minute, and hour of the day. When you get engrossed with it too much you would not have time for other things including God your creator.
For the records, the major reason for our existence here on earth is to have fellowship with the Father. That’s why God didn’t create man in the image or likeness of the angels. He created man in His image as stated by the book Genesis 1:27. So, God doesn’t want anything to take His place in our lives. He wants to have undeniable access to us all the time. He wants to communicate with us all the time, He wants to tell us what to do and when to do them.

Unfortunately, social media has become one of the major distractions. Many believers run to the social media to share their story seeking counsel instead of running to God.
The time some believers ought to spend on the word, they have exhausted it on social media. The time they are supposed to spend finding God, Social Media has taken that time. This is an addiction and it is a very bad one. Social media is fast becoming a demigod in the life of most believers. They would rather secure their access to social media than their Bible. Some can’t even remember the last time they opened their Bible for a study. But they will grow rapidly impatient if they are denied access to social media for only a few hours.
God is calling as many of you who have lost it. He is passionate about you. He wants you back and He is ready to help you get back to Him. That’s why He has laid it in our hearts to write this blog teaching the 5 Ways Christians Can gain control over social media addiction.
5 Christians Can Gain Control Over Social Media Addiction
Turn Off Your Data And Notification
It is that bad that most Christians can’t concentrate in place of prayer. Their concentration ends the moment there is a notification on their phone. Mark 9:47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. You should enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire. If your eyes will cause you to sin, the scripture advises that you pluck it out.
If turning on your data and leaving your notification on will hi dear your concentration in the place of prayer or Bible study, you should turn it off. When the data is off, notifications will not pop up and this will help you concentrate better. Meanwhile, when you do this every time it becomes part of you. At this time, you will be able to set the limit between social media and God. When it is time to seek God you wouldn’t disrupt it by your obsession for social media.
Pray For Deliverance and Help
Social media is not an evil scheme. It is a means of getting connected to the world. However, there are so many things that started with a good motive but later turn bad. The devil sometimes hides behind the love for social media to drag believers away from God. You will see Christians that can no longer spend 30mins in the place of prayer or study of the word, but they can spend several hours on social media.
Do not be ignorant of the devil’s scheme to get you. Pray to God for help. Pray for deliverance from the demon of social media that has possessed you. Pray that everything taking the place of God in your life should be destroyed by the fire of the Holy Ghost.
Draft Your To-Do List
To achieve this, you must be determined and disciplined. Gaining control over social media addiction is as toxic as fighting sex addiction, drug addiction, and every other evil addiction. This is because the more you fight trying to free yourself from its grasp, the more it fights back holding you down.
You should draft a to-do list for each day. Ensure that less attention and time is allocated for your phone or any other devices you use to access the numerous social media platforms. Od away with your phone until you are done with the day’s business. Until you have sought the face of God and you have done everything that is needed to be done. After this, you can then pick your phone.
Invest Your Time Into Other Hobbies
Find time to go back to your hobbies. If you don’t have one, create time to discover other things that interest you besides using your phone or other devices. You can invest in reading, art, and craft or talking to other people. This is will serve as a distraction for you. When you continue with your new hobbies, in no time you will get used to them and you will have lesser reasons to pick up your phone or other devices.
Talk To Someone
Like every other person, Most Christians suffer hard with social media addiction. Sometimes it doesn’t only interfere with the time you spend praying or seeking God, it also disrupts your sleep. You stay up every night as you expend hours on social media connecting with people from different parts of the world. When you notice that you can no longer stay out of social media, don’t keep quiet about it, speak to someone.
It is wise to talk to a therapist. The therapist will help you overcome this addiction that is gradually wasting your time. Also, while you see the therapist speak to your pastor for spiritual counsel too. Your pastor is anointed to destroy the stronghold of darkness over your life. Do not keep silent about this addiction, speak out and get help.
