Today, we will be dealing with Prayer Points To Maintain Abstinence.

As Christians there are many things we need to refrain from doing, from the bible we learn how Daniel, Johnny the Baptist, Meshach, Shedrach and Abednego abstaining from things that are not profitable to them. In Luke 1:15, the angel Gabriel told Zacharias the specifications of what his son John should not drink when he became an adult. He said, “For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink.” John was to be consecrated onto the Lord. He ate only locusts and wild honey.

Why Christian Must Master The Art of Abstinence

While there are several evil things we must abstain from as believers, this explains why it is important for us to master the art of abstinence.

1. The first reason why we must learn abstinence is because staying away from evil makes us holy and acceptable to God. One mistake most believers make is thinking they own themselves. We do not own ourself, God own us. Everything about our life must be in alignment with His will and purpose for our lives.
2. Another reason why we must master the art of abstinence is because it helps us build the spirit of obedience. When God instructed that the baby Samson must not cut his hair and he must not marry from a strange. God wanted him to abstain from every immoral act with a woman from a strange land. The scripture recorded that Samson still went ahead and marry Delilah from a land and tribe he has been warned not to marry from and the end is disaster for him.
3. The last reason why we must abstain from certain things is for discipline. Many Christians fell prey to the antics of the devil because they lacked discipline. A typical example is Samson. To fully fulfill the purpose of God for our lives, we must be disciplined and abstinence helps us build our level of discipline.

For Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, they took a firm decision that they “would not defile [themselves] with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank.” Rather, they said to the steward, “Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink.” The scripture says, “And at the end of ten days their features appeared better and fatter in flesh than all the young men who ate the portion of the king’s delicacies” (Dan. 1:1-15). The king’s delicacies.

In one of his prayers, David said, “Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies” (Ps. 141:4).

Solomon advised: “When you sit down to eat with someone important, keep in mind who he is. If you have a big appetite, restrain yourself. Don’t be greedy for the fine food he serves; he may be trying to trick you”. The four young men chose to reject the delicacies because they were able to control themselves and restrain their appetite. The cooks prepared them with things that were offered to idols and animals that were classified as unclean by Jewish law at that time. Therefore, they lived a life of abstinence. It was the practice of self-denial and self-restraint, which enables people to discipline themselves and live a holy life style.

As Christians, we should be ready to make sacrifices by denying ourselves the pleasures of life so that we would be able to live a lifestyle of uprightness, integrity, gentleness, propriety, decorum, charity, love, and Christian piety. We should not allow ourselves to be swallowed up amidst the deceitful lustful pleasures of the world, and sin (delicacies). We should not defile ourselves with the pollution of sin. The prayer points in today’s topic is to guide us , we all know what ever it is we are battling with individually, we should use the prayer points to guide us on praying against our habits that are unpleasing as Christians and that are making us fall short of God’s glory.

7. I pray and ask for spiritual strength to reject and resist sin and all its appearances.
8. Empower me Lord Jesus and give me all the resources I need to abstain from evil things , attitudes,habits , friends, peer pressure that might withdraw me away from you
9. Grow my faith Jesus so that it can withstand the test of time time
10. Build faith my faith Jesus so that I can worthy of being called your strong soldier and worthy enough to worship you in heaven
11. Help me at all times lord Jesus to withdraw from evil communications, self destructions, profane thoughts and talks , consecrate me and let me exist only for you
12. I want to be a strong soldier like Daniel, Meshach Shedrach and Abednego
13. I want my faith to stand the strength of time like Job
14. I want my faith in you to be strongly rooted like that of Father Abraham
15. Help me see you and only you Lord Jesus
16. Thanks for the answered prayers
17. Thanks lord Jesus for at the end of everything, we will celebrate with you in heaven as strong christians soldiers
