PSALM MEANING VERSE BY VERSE.
Verse 1: Bow down thine ear, O Lord, hear me: for I am poor and needy.
The first thing to take note of in this verse is the attitude of the psalmist. He portrays a state of humility and complete surrender before God, letting him know that he is helpless without him. He calls on God to listen to his plea for he has great needs. He knew the way to God’s heart, he knew that God will not overlook a broken and contrite heart. This is what we should also do both when we are in need and when we are not. We should always go broken before God, letting him no how poor and helpless without him.
Verse 2: Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee.
The Psalmist seem to be in a state of trouble in the hands of those who want to take his life. He is however just in his dealings and has done them no wrong. He therefore comes with a clean heart to the God whom he trusts to save him from their hands. This is a prayer for preservation that we can hold on to in similar situations.
Verse 3: Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.
One of the most important things we need from God is his mercy; his loving kindness, compassion and ability to overlook our weaknesses. This was the psalms it daily plea and it should be our also. For if God withdraws his mercy from us, we will not last a second.
Verse 4: Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
This is a request to God to lighten up and gladden his soul. It’s obvious that he has become worn out by the troubles and needs in his life to the point where he has lost his joy. He now lifts up his soul to God for a restoration of joy and gladness.
Verse 5: For thou, o lord, art good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call on thee.
God is good and compassionate; ever ready to overlook our faults and flaws. His love also compels him to keep us safe from our foes and to ensure that our minds are in the right state. This he would always do as long as we continually call on him.
Verse 6&7: Give ear, O Lord, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications. In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee and thou wilt answer me.
We see the psalmist here again call upon God to listen to his plea for help. However, he comes on a different note this time around. He affirms his faith in God’s ability to hear and answer him in the say of trouble. He tells God to listen to him because he knows that anytime he calls on God in the midst of troubles, he would definitely answer him. Such a confidence is what we should have as believers. If we are trusting God to help us, then we must first be confident that he is able to answer us.
Verse 8&9: Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works. All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name.
This is not just a song of praise in reference to God, it is also a way of acknowledging God’s authority of all men including our enemies. God rules over all men and all nations, no one can match him or his works. For this cause therefore they must glorify him. This serves to teach us that for us to see God at work in our lives, we must first believe that he has the authority to do all things.
Verse 10: For thou art great, and thou doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.
Surely!!! God alone is great and him alone can so great wonders. His greatness is what ensures that we are served from all our troubles. We must therefore be acknowledge him for it.
Verse 11: Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.
This is another expression of love and surrender. The psalmist seeks to know God, to fear him and to walk in his ways. Truly God loves us unconditionally, however, our heart of submission to his ways also compels him to act on our behalf. Our desire to receive God’s help should not be our reason for wanting to walk in his ways. Rather, was should because of our love for him, walk in his truth and do his will.
Verse 12&13: I will praise thee, o lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name forevermore. For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.
The Psalmist begins to praise God yet again. This time he praises him for his mercy and deliverance. A form of reminding him about what he has some in the past, giving room for him to do more even now. He sure deserves to be praised for that!
Verse 14: O God, the proud are risen against me, and the assemblies of violent men have sought after my soul, and have not set thee before them.
After remembering his past deeds, he now begins to plea for deliverance from his enemies; those who seek after his life to take it. Men who didn’t acknowledge is God had come against him, trying to prove their power. In the same vien, men raise against us to destroy us. But one thing is certain, God will always prove to then that he is greater.
Verse 15: But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, long suffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.
The psalmist engaged the same principles he previously used; acknowledging God’s ability in order to get him to act on our behalf. He is pleading for help but at the same time acknowledging his ability to help him. God is full of love, mercy and compassion for us and acknowledging it compels him to act on our behalf.
Verse 16&17: O turn unto me, and have mercy upon me: give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the son of thy hand maid. Shew a token for good; that they which hate me may see it, and be ashamed: because thou, Lord, hast holpen me, and comforted me.
The last two verses are a full expression of the psalmist’s desire to be delivered from his present trouble. He asks God for mercy, for strength and a show of his goodness. He calls to God to help him so that those who hated him will see that God loves him, helps him and is good to him.
