PSALM 16 meaning verse by verse

Verses 1-3 Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust. O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extended not to thee;

King David probably wrote the Psalm when he was in trouble, and he needed God to keep him safe. He must have been in trouble, and he believed that he could only put his trust and confidence in the almighty God to save and deliver him. When we are in pain or when we need help, these verses are useful. King David trusted God and still found a way to praise Him even though he was in despair. When going through challenges or when the devil is trying to use the things of this world to lure us back into sin, we can use this Psalm to ask God for help for God to preserve us from the distractions of this worldly things and let us not be carried away. These verses showed us that when we are in trouble, we should trust God and not deny Him, but we should always acknowledge Him in everything we do, even King David happily called God his Lord. King David knew only when he has God by his side can he progress, that is when he can have something. He knew without God, nothing good could come out of him. This way, the verse 2b is admonishing us always to believe that nothing can be done without God having a say in it. It can only be achieved when God approves it. Making references to the saints on earth, David found delight in that who trust the name of the Lord and who believes is the one true God. This is also a call for us to love the Lord and also love those who love God.

Verses 4-6. : But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.: Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.: The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and my cup: thou maintainest my lot: The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.

These verses stated the importance of serving the one true God. Idol worshippers shall not be regarded before God. The sorrows, troubles, tribulations of those who serve other gods shall be multiplied. King David knew the importance of serving the true God; he knew what it takes to be obedient to God and also the wrath that awaits those who will not fear the Lord.

King David lived his life for God. These verses can be used to preach the Gospel truth, which is Christ to people to accept Him and believe in the great and mighty things He will do. The beliefs of the pagan are not worthy to emulate compared to the commandments of Christ. In continuing to admonish the unbelievers, the pointless sacrifices they make can be pointed out to them as vain practices. The latter verse expresses that God is our inheritance. It explains the benefit of believing the one true God. The verses further explain that we should find comfort in the Lord. God will not only bless us. He will make every one of our doings prosper as He has said that lines will fall in pleasant places for you, and He has also promised us to give us a good inheritance. God has made us all a promise, and we should hold unto our faith and believe that come what may, His blessings are ever sure. Believing in the one true God has benefits but for only those who will trust him, accept Him, and ready to give their all to Him.

Verse 7-8  I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

When our faith starts to fail, these verses can help us hold unto God stronger. It helps us understand that the gods can’t help us; neither can they render any help. God is our help in times of trouble and in times of need. When we need God’s guidance, God is always available. He is always available, ever ready to give counsel. This Psalm majorly is rendered as a way of admonishing ourselves when we feel like we might backslide any time if care is not taken. This helps us to listen to God’s counsel and instructions. This helps us to grow our faith and bring back our intimacy with God. It helps us to understand the importance of prayer and waiting on the Lord as only those who wait on God will He show great and mighty things. We should always believe that God is for us. He is still with us as the latter verse says He is at my right hand, I shall not be Moved.

Verses 9-11 Therefore, my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer Thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand, there are pleasures forevermore.

The benefits believers find in God is unending. Hence the need for us to always praise God. The ending verses of this Psalm show the benefits of God are endless; therefore, God is to be referenced. Those who trust God find peace, joy, gladness, glory, everlasting lives. He will not make the righteous suffer as He has promised always to have our backs. It is now left for us to hold unto His promise as believers, to trust in Him, and have His fear in us. Those who know the importance of serving God not only acknowledge Him with their outward appearance but also with their inner mind. As believers, we should obey God always, and no matter what the problem is, we should know that in His presence, there is fullness of joy. He will show us great and mighty things that we knoweth not.  Instead of us being troubled, we should trust God, always rejoice, and have complete trust in God.

  • Whenever we need to praise God for His goodness and kindness
  • Whenever our strength starts to fail us, and we need words of encouragement.
  • When we need a constant reminder that God is for us and has greater benefits for us
  • When we need help
  • When we need counsel and guidance
  • When we want God to talk to us

  • God help me to accept you as my Savior and Redeemer
  • Lord God, help my faith in you never to wither.
  • Help me to have a zeal for you, a burning fire that can’t be quenched
  • Lord, help me not to miss out on your promises for me
  • Lord, help me always to trust you and wait on you.
