Psalm 23 Prayer For Protection And Defense

Psalm 23:1: 1  The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

The book of psalm is the most powerful prayer book in the bible. Every prayerful Child of God knows the spiritual importance of the book of psalms. Today we shall be looking at psalm 23 prayer for protection and defense. I believe most Christians can recite psalm 23 from verse 1 to verse 6 without opening there bibles, but beyond that, there are powerful revelations that we can get in that psalm.

Psalm 23 was a prayer of David, when he was faced with fierce opposition from his enemies, including King Saul. David was a man of prayer, that is why he became a man of victory. As we look into this psalm 23 today, we shall be drawing out some powerful prayers from it that will help us in our Spiritual walk with God.  Every time we are faced with attacks from the gates of hell, we can always draw inspiration from the book of psalms and psalm 23 is a powerful psalm to engage against the attacks of the enemy.  Before we go into the prayers, let us look at the meaning of psalm 23 verse by verse.

Psalm 23 Meaning Verse By Verse

Psalm 23:1: The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

In the First verse, David acknowledged that the Lord is His shepherd. A shepherd is a guide, a leader, the one that directs you. This is very important because in every warfare you must pick a side. David started by acknowledging that he was on Gods side and that the Lord is his shepherd, his guide, protector and defender. He made it clear that the Lord was leading Him.

Psalm 23:2-3: 2  He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. 3  He restoreth my soul:

Here David went ahead to describe the benefits of following the Lord his shepherd. He talks about lying down In green pastures which means  a state of abundance and plenty, he also talks about being led in still waters which means peace of heart and quietness of spirit. In Verse 3 he talks about the restoration of his soul, which means his assurance of eternal salvation in God. He also talked about his shepherd leading him in the path of righteousness. When God is leading us, it shows in our righteous living and spiritual dedication to Him.

Psalm 23:4-5: 4  Yea,  though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.5  Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

David speaking here talks about his faith and confidence in His Shepherd as he journeys through the dark valley of the shadow of death, he declares that he will fear no evil, because The Lord is with Him. He is more conscious of the presence of His shepherd than he is with the evil that surrounds him. He also declares that he is constantly comforted by the rod and the staff of his shepherd. The rod and the staff here means the word of God. The Word of God gives us comfort in times of distress.

In verse 5, he declares that even in the midst of his enemies, the Lord still prepares a table of blessings before him and His cup of favour overflows. This is powerful, as long as the Lord is for us, the presence of the enemies is irrelevant. David also let us know that His shepherds anoints his head with oil, which is an anointing of the Holy Spirit for protection, exemption and preservation. It is also an anointing of all round favour.

Psalm 23:6:  6  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the Lord ^†for ever.

David rounded up these psalms by declaring that only goodness and mercies shall follow him all the days of his life, and he will dwell in no other place than the presence of God forever hallelujah. What a great confession of faith, in the midst of great enemy opposition. This is the kind of attitude that made King David the greatest King in all of Isreal.

When Do I need To Pray With Psalm 23.

A lot of believers may ask this question, the answer is simple, you pray this prayer when you are going through tough times in your life. You engage these prayers when you need Gods protection over your life. Praying with psalm 23 gives us hope and assurance that in the midst of the storm your God is with you. It also destroys fear and anxiety from your heart and makes you bold and strong to overcome your mountains. Now let us look at some powerful psalm 23 prayer points.

1. Father I thank You for you are my Shepherd, leader and guide In Jesus Christ Name

2. Father, I come into your throne of grace to receive mercies and grace in time of need In Jesus Christ Name

3. I decree today, that You Lord are my Shepherd, therefore no evil shall come near my dwelling In Jesus Christ Name

4. I decree today, that you Lord are my defender, therefore no enemy shall prevail over my life In Jesus Christ Name

5. I decree that every enemy that is planning evil against me shall be put to eternal shame In Jesus Christ Name

6. I decree that I shall never be discouraged in life because your word is always guiding me in the name of Jesus Christ.

7. Father, by your mighty hand, help me to walk through the storms of life in the name of Jesus Christ.

8. Father, let your mighty hand of protection, continue to protect me and my household in the name of Jesus Christ.

9. I decree that in the midst of these oppositions, I shall prosper In Jesus Christ Name

10. Only goodness and mercies shall follow me all the days of my life In Jesus Christ Name. Thank You Jesus Christ.
