PSALM 3 MEANING VERSE BY VERSE
Verse 1: O LORD, HOW MANY ARE MY FOES! MANY ARE RISING AGAINST ME
This is the first verse in chapter 3 and it was addressed to the lord, it shows us how David’s enemies increased in the conspiracy against him And the heart of men of Israel were against him like a roaring lion ready to devour, disposes him of his kingdom and to destroy his life.
Verse 2: MANY ARE SAYING OF ME, THERE IS NO HELP FOR HIM IN GOD
This verse talks about some of the reproaches of his enemies, how the psalmist was forsaken and made a prey by the enemy; he was entirely forsaken and has no power of defending himself, no hope of escaping from his problems and that God does not intend to interfere and save him neither in this world nor in the world to come.
Verse 3: BUT THOU, O LORD, ART A SHIELD FOR ME, MY GLORY, AND THE LIFTER OF MY HEAD.
In this verse, the psalmist here expressed confidence that the Lord had indeed heard his cry and answered his prayer from his holy hills. The use of the shield in this verse; it was natural to speak of God as the “shield” or the “protector” of his people who in time of danger and trouble he will be the lifter up of there head and they shall be restored back to their former dignity.
Verse 3: I CRIED OUT LOUD TO THE LORD, AND HE ANSWERS ME FROM HIS HOLY HILL
This verse talks about when the psalmist was exposed to much danger and therefore he gave utterance to the deep anguish of his soul in words when his enemies were so increased about him thus making his appeal confidently to him. God his a heater of prayer i.e he hears your cry when you call him out of his earthly and heavenly sanctuary where he is every present to answer the prayers of the saint directs to him, and from thence he hears, blesses and answers our anguish.
I LIE DOWN AND SLEEP; I WAKE AGAIN, FOR THE LORD SUSTAINS ME
Verse 5: This verse explains the courage the psalmist had when he knew that he has God for his protector and may go quietly and confidently to his bed not fearing the violence of the fire, the edge of the sword and the design of the wicked men. Though humanly speaking there is the reason u to fear you could have been made to sleep the sleep of death and be crushed but God stood as a shield and protected him and his life is still while in him safe and secure.
Verse 6: I AM NOT AFRAID OF TEN THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE SET THEMSELVES AGAINST ME ROUNDABOUT
David was a man of courage from his youth; his engaging with Goliath and his military exploits show it. And now there are now many thousands rising against him, though strength and numbers are nothing against the presence of God, the psalmist now says that he would not be afraid if any number of foes should rise up in rebellion against him. He who has made God his refuge certainly has no cause to fear.
Verse 7: ARISE, O LORD! DELIVER ME, O MY GOD! FOR THOU SMITE ALL MY ENEMIES ON THE CHEEK, THOU DOST BREAK THE TEETH OF THE WICKED
In this verse, though he knew that God had taken up his fight, yet he knew that his continued protection depended on his continuous prayers. The psalmist spoke in confidence in God’s intervention because he was still surrounded by numerous enemies and he knows for sure that he would be victorious.
The psalmist confidently called on him to do it because he had this disarmed his enemies in time past and he hoped that he would do so again.
Verse 8: DELIVERANCE BELONGS TO THE LORD; THY BLESSING BE UPON THY PEOPLE.
This last verse shows the saving power of God. It is God alone who saves, Those who are saved from the power and the guilt of sin are his people. His mercy saved them; and it is by his blessing being continually upon them, that they continue to be saved. He is the fountain where our help and salvation come from i.e it pertains to God alone to save. The psalmist had no expectation to save himself if he was to be saved he felt that it was to be alone by God. His Mercy saved him and it is by his Blessing being continually upon them.
