Today we will be dealing with 5 ways to shun adultery in marriage. In the book of Exodus 20:14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. Adultery is a great offense before God Almighty. God wants holiness, He wants purity that is why He stated that adultery should be shunned.
King David brought trouble into his family when he became adulterous. He commited the act against the wife of his faithful servant, Uriah. David laid with Uriah and got her pregnant. As if that was not enough, he had Uriah killed in the battle field to cover his sin. God was not pleased with David for what he has done, so the child that was conceived from the conception between David and Uriah’s wife died. God had to take out the seed of unholiness.

Many believers find it so difficult to abstain from adultery despite being a fervent preacher or Prayerist. Sometimes we wonder why it is so difficult to shun adultery. First we must understand why God instructed that we must not commit adultery.
Why God Said Though Shall Not Commit Adultery
It Destroy The Original Intent of God For Marriage
Adultery destroys the original intent of God for marriage. God stated that it was not good enough for a man to stay alone that was why God made woman out of a man. The natural intent of God was for a man to be with with a woman. Little wonder the scripture says in the book of Genesis 2:24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. The purpose of sex is for it to be done within the confines of marriage. Any sexual activity outside wedlock is sin and the purpose of marriage is for a man and a woman to be together and form one body.
Adultery Destroys A Marriage
Adultery destroys marriage. When a man or woman goes into adultery, it will affect the flow of things in the marriage. Their partners will suffer it and their children will suffer from it. There is a supernatural covenant that is attached to sex, it brings commitment and unity, that’s why God instructed that it should be done within the confines of marriage.
King David’s family felt the strong heat of adultery after the king laid with Uriah’s wife and conceive a child. Death came into the house of the man who was regarded as a man after God’s heart. Despite David praying fervently to God to spare the life of the child, God still took the child away. Adultery destroys the peace of a family.
Adultery Doesn’t Glorify God
God wants us to shun everything that doesn’t glorify His holy name. The purpose of our existence is to have koinonia with God. One of the things that breaks the communication channel between man and God is sin. Adultery is a sin that the spirit of God greatly frown at that is why God instructed that we should desist from it.
God wants us to indulge in the things that glorifies His Holy name alone. When we enter into adultery, we start giving the gospel of Christ a negative name which is not good enough.
Five Ways To Shun Adultery
Have The Fear of God
The scripture says the fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom. We need the Wisdom of God to shun adultery. Joseph was swift to recognise the fear of the Lord that was why he was wise enough to flee. The book of Genesis 39:9 There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”
Joseph understood that the wickedness he wants to do is not only against his boss but so also is it a sin against God. And because he feared God greatly, he could refrain from laying with the wife of his master.
Know When To Flee
This is still about wisdom. The scripture says wisdom is profitable to leader. You should not wait to cast and bind a demon you don’t see when you are being tempted to go in with another woman who is not your wife. As mucha as you are very prayerful, you must also know when to flee and never look back.
Joseph was able to overcome the temptation of laying with his master’s wife not because he only has the fear of God, but because he knew when to run. You must know the right time to run and never look back when the temptation comes. King David fell for the temptation because he looked to much and didn’t know when to flee. There is no need to cast and bind any demon, the solution lies in you know the best time to run and never look back.
Study The Word of God and Pray
A portion of the lord’s prayer states that lead us not into temptation but deliver us from all evil. You must watch and pray. The scripture says the word of the lord is a lamp unto my feet, a light to my path. When we study the word of God, we get a better understanding of who God truly is and what He is not.
While we pray to God, we must beg that we are not led into temptation that will be bigger than what we bare.
Love Your Spouse Dearly
One of the biggest causes of adultery is lack of love. After God had given the 10 commandments when Christ came, he was asked which of the commandments was the genuine and most important, Christ said it is love.
When you love your neighbor as much as you live yourself, you would not want to do anything to test your wife. Love will make you commited to the union, when your level of commitment get to an extent, it becomes quite difficult for you to go with another woman or man.
Speak To Someone For Help
One of the problems believers make is thinking they don’t need help from anyone. Yes, you can do all things through Christ that strengthens you, however, the gathering of the brethren must also not be forsaken. When the temptation of adultery begins to build up in your heart, don’t just nurse or contend with that feeling alone, you must endeavor to speak to people so you can have an idea of what is wrong.
Some times you might need to speak your pastor or a counselor. They are in a position to help you overcome the spirit of adultery.
